Compression molding normally uses a hydraulic press in which a molding tool is fixed to top and bottom platens of the press. The molding tool consists of a top cavity and bottom cavity, designed to produce the part to be manufactured and heated to the required molding temperature. Once the materials of choice are placed into the open mold, the press closes to apply an agreed pressure designed to force the material to flow within the cavities of the mold. The molding cycle continues to maintain heat and pressure until the polymer has cured and the part molded. Once molded it is removed from the tool and trimmed to provide a finished part.
Compression molding of GMT mold (Glass mat Thermoplastic) is very similar to compression molding of SMC molding , with the only major difference being the type of raw material used in the process. In thermoplastic compression molding, GMT mold is used for making high-volume parts. This is the only thermoplastic manufacturing technique used in widespread commercial applications for making thermoplastic structural parts.
