Canadian composites company Sigma Industries has developed a new bus body shell concept targeted at the emerging market for hybrid electric drive city and urban transportation.
Full details of the Hybrid Composites Bus body are being withheld prior to its official launch at the US American Public Transportation Association annual meeting in San Diego in the US next month. However, the company says its solution weighs in at around 80% of the weight of a traditional metal bus body – a saving of 3 tonnes.
Sigma’s construction technique uses longitudinal structural modules that are subsequently bonded together, allowing body length to be adapted without restriction by mould dimensions. It can also be adapted to match the style of existing bus designs.
Denis Bertrand, president and CEO of Sigma Industries, says the new technique is flexible, simplifies vehicle build, and will extend vehicle lifetimes.
